  Joel May, Associate Director of Bands

Joel May is in his second year with the James E. Taylor High School Band. He conducts the Concert Band as well as teaches the Taylor Drum Line. As the percussion teacher, he also teaches the beginning percussionists at Memorial Parkway and McMeans Junior High Schools.

Mr. May earned an undergraduate Music Education degree from Baylor University. He participated in many of the ensembles including the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Golden Wave Marching Band, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Band, and even Courtside Players. He has performed with several professional groups including the Waco Symphony and So Percussion. He was a sustaining member of the Dallas Mavericks Drum Line for the last two seasons, but has been performing with them since 2004.

Before teaching at Taylor High School, Mr. May was teaching at South Grand Prairie High School. He spent the last two years there teaching band and percussion at the high school and three of the middle schools. He has also taught and performed in WGI Percussion and Drum Corps. He has been a Drum Line Technician at several other high schools before going to Grand Prairie and currently teaches summer Drum Line camps all over the state.

Mr. May is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Bandmasters Association, the Percussive Arts Society, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
