JD
(John David) Janda is a native of Bellville, Texas. While
attending the public schools of Bellville, JD was very active in the
theater department and band program. These formative years’ interests
have turned into a lifelong love and career. JD was a National
Merit Scholar and upon graduation from Bellville High School attended
Blinn College in Brenham pursuing both music and mathematics. JD
earned his Bachelor of Music Education Degree at Southwestern University
in Georgetown, Texas with a minor in Trombone Performance. Mr.
Janda has done graduate work at West Texas State University, East Texas
State University, and the University of Houston and will soon complete a
Masters degree in Educational Management from the University of
Houston/Clear Lake.
Mr. Janda’s professional career has spanned
27 years. He has served as Director of Bands at Columbus High School, Boling High School, Katy Junior High School and the last 18 years at James E. Taylor High School in the Katy Independent School District. At Taylor High School, Mr. Janda directs the 300 member JET Marching Band, the Wind Ensemble, the Junior Varsity Band, and serves as Associate Conductor of the Taylor High School Symphony Orchestra. Bands under Mr. Janda’s direction have made numerous appearances at the UIL State Marching Contest, placed high in the TMEA Honor Band Competition, and have been consistent UIL Sweepstakes Awards recipients.
His concert bands and jazz bands at Taylor High School have won many
best in class awards at festivals across America. Groups under his
direction have performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Atlanta
Symphony Hall in Atlanta, Georgia, the Meyerson Symphony Hall in Dallas,
Texas, the Cherry Blossom Festival Parade in Washington, DC and the
“Spectro Magic” Parade in Disney’s Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida.
Mr. Janda serves in a number of leadership capacities. Currently,
he is the Fine Arts Department Chairman for Taylor High School and
serves on numerous KISD committees. JD currently serves as the
Chairman of the Texas Music Educators Association’s Band Division.
JD has also served as Region Band Chairman for Music Region 23, the TMEA
Area E Tryout Chairman, the TMEA 5A All-State Tryout Chairman, and is
chairman of the UIL State Music Advisory Committee. He is a member
of Phi Beta Mu - International Bandmaster Honor Fraternity, the Texas
Music Adjudicators Association, the Texas Bandmasters Association, the
Texas Music Educators Association, and the International Association for
Jazz Education. Janda was recognized for his outstanding
contributions to students lives in 2001 when he was named recipient of
the “Southwestern Bell - UIL Sponsor Excellence Award” for the State of
Texas.
JD’s
wife, Nancy, teaches sixth grade math in the Katy ISD at McMeans Junior
High. His daughter, Janie, is a freshman music major at Texas Tech
University and plays horn in “The Goin’ Band.” His son, Gordon, is
a seventh grader at McMeans Junior High where he is active in many
activities including playing tuba in the band. When not busy at
school, JD loves to listen to jazz music, play golf, work in the yard
and “cheer like crazy” for the Houston Astros and Green Bay Packers.
